Nick's Performer Formula
Howdy howdy,
So one night during a particularly brutal open mic I got bored and tried to concoct a formula that makes it easy to determine how many minutes each comic (or any performer) gets at an open mic based on a couple of simple factors:
The total number of comics that night: P = (# of Performers)
The total time available for the open mic (generally an hour and a half, or two hours. T = Total Time Avil. [min]
Any extra time you need to reserve, like a drop in by a comic. E = Extra Time Buffer [min]
i= Intro Time Between Each Perfomer [min]
This gives you your minutes per performer, or Mp [min].
FORMULA
[(T-i-E-Pi)/P] = Mp
KEY
P = (# of Performers)
T = Total Time Avil. [min]
E = Extra Time Buffer [min]
i= Intro Time Between Each Perfomer [min]
Mp= Minutes per Performer [min]
EXAMPLE*
IF: P=20 people, T=90 minutes, E=5 minutes for material the host wants to do, and i= .5 min (think 30 second intro).
Then each performer gets 3.725min. Which is about 3 minutes and 44 seconds.
*NOTES*
If you need to convert the decimal part of your answer into seconds, just multiply it by 60.
You can rearrange the formula through very simple algebra to determine how many performers you can have based on total time & minutes per performer. But you’ll have to do that yourself you lazy ass.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions or have trouble using it. I made an excel sheet which is pretty handy too if someone wants that, you can change the variables and what-not.
